Delverium Fishing Guide: How to Fish and Get Bait
Craft a rod, gather bait from the critters you catch, and fish the water near your base. A short guide to the parts of Delverium's fishing loop that are confirmed.
Early Access Note
Delverium is actively being developed. Recipes, balance, progression and other mechanics may change during future updates.

Quick Answer
Fishing in Delverium is a short loop: craft a fishing rod, get bait, then cast into a nearby body of water.
The quality of your rod and your bait can affect the type of catch you get. Catchable critters can be used as bait, and the fish you land are part of the game's cooking and food system.
How Fishing Works
Source: Sagestone Games development update, June 7, 2026 (Fishing and Critters).
Delverium's fishing is built from four confirmed parts, and that is the whole system as far as official information goes:
- Craft a fishing rod.
- Collect bait.
- Cast the rod into a nearby body of water.
- Land your catch — rod and bait quality can affect what you pull up.
The official update does not describe the timing or controls used to land a catch. We have not verified those details for the current build.
We are not listing rod recipes, material costs or crafting stations. Those are balance values in a game that is still being tuned, and we have not verified them.
How to Start Fishing
Get a rod first. Fishing needs a fishing pole or rod, and it is craftable — that is the confirmed starting point. Craft it before you go looking for water, or you are making two trips instead of one.
Then find water. The rod is cast into a nearby body of water, so this is not a system that sends you on a long expedition. Water near your base is enough to start.
Fishing is one of the additions in the Early Access version rather than something the demo had, so if you are coming from the demo this is new to you. See what else Early Access adds.
How to Get Bait
Critters are the confirmed bait source. Catchable critters can be used as fishing bait, which is worth knowing before you go looking for a shop that sells it — see what critters are below.
We are not listing bait names, or where to find each one. Species lists and their locations are details we have not verified for the current Early Access version, and a wrong list is worse than no list.
Tip
Because critters double as bait, a normal trip out gathering can restock your fishing supplies at the same time. You do not need a dedicated bait run.
What Are Critters?
Critters are the small catchable creatures you run into while exploring and gathering. For fishing purposes there is one confirmed fact about them, and it is the important one: catchable critters can be used as fishing bait.
That turns them into fishing supplies you collect by accident. Bait is something you need a steady supply of rather than a one-off, and since critters are the confirmed source, picking them up as you go is cheaper than making a dedicated trip for bait later.
Critters also sit alongside raising animals as part of the game's wider farming and creature systems — farming is confirmed to include crops, fishing and animals. We have not verified how animal husbandry works in the current build, so we are not going to describe it here either.
What we are not listing: critter names, what they look like, where each one is found, or which ones make better bait. None of that is verified for the current Early Access version, and a half-confirmed species list is more misleading than an absent one.
Does Fishing Rod Quality Matter?
Yes, in the sense that is confirmed: the quality of your fishing rod can affect the type of catch you get.
What we cannot tell you is how. We are not listing rod tiers, rod recipes, or an exact breakdown of what each rod produces. That is progression detail we have not verified in the Early Access build, and it is the kind of thing that changes between updates.
Does Bait Quality Matter?
Yes — bait quality can affect the type of catch too, by the same confirmed statement.
We are not listing bait tiers or which bait catches what, for the same reason as above. Nothing about the rod-versus-bait split is official beyond the fact that both can matter.
The practical takeaway from the two sections above is that both halves of the setup matter. Upgrading one and treating the other as an afterthought is an easy thing to overlook.
What Are Fish Used For?
Fish are part of the cooking and food system. A catch is ingredients, not a trophy — it feeds the same food loop your farm does, which is the main reason fishing is worth doing alongside farming rather than instead of it. See the farming section of the beginner guide.
We are not listing recipes, hunger values, sell prices or which fish are worth keeping. Food balance moves during Early Access, and we would rather leave the numbers out than print ones that stop being true after the next patch.
Fishing Tips
These are priorities rather than mechanics — the confirmed loop above is what actually governs fishing.
- Craft the rod before you go looking for water. Otherwise you are making two trips instead of one.
- Fish close to home. Fishing works in a nearby body of water, so there is no reason to make it a long expedition early on.
- Treat rod and bait as a pair. Both can affect what you catch, so upgrading one and ignoring the other is easy to overlook.
- Carry your catch home. Fish feed the cooking and food system, so they are worth the inventory slot.
- Bring bait from your normal gathering trips rather than setting aside a separate session for it.
